The Pragmatic Oil Spill Fix That BP’s Still Waiting On
May 25, 2010 at 9:34PM by Mark Warren
So on MSNBC tonight, first on Hardball, Chris Matthews excoriated the White House’s irresolute response to the Gulf catastrophe, quoting John Kennedy from the American University speech: “Our problems are man-made, therefore they may be solved by man.” Instead, Matthews said the White House was treating the spill as if it were “a BP problem, to be solved by BP.” He then went on to say that we as a nation must immediately find the resolve to end the calamity on the Gulf Coast, and he called for getting tankers into the Gulf and “sucking up that oil.”
Just after Matthews, on tonight’s Countdown with Keith Olbermann, former Shell Oil President John Hofmeister (whose important new book, Why We Hate the Oil Companies, came out just today), was asked by Olbermann: “So whatever happened to the idea that supposedly had worked in the Gulf of Arabia, with supertankers?”

Former Shell Oil President Blames Government for Oil Spill
Author: Nicole Wong
Published: May 25, 2010 at 11:33 am
According to John Heifmeister, former president of Shell Oil and author of Why We Hate Oil Companies, if the government didn’t force oil companies to drill offshore in deep sea, the BP oil rig accident would not have happened in the first place.
To him, the U.S. government’s cowardly response to pressure from environmental groups made it so that legislation won’t let oil companies drill on land, a significantly less risky endeavor….

Hating oil companies isn’t a solution: John Hofmeister wants to change the way Americans look at energy
While the Deepwater Horizon oil spill has proved to be a disaster for off-shore drilling, it has been something of a public relations boon for Houstonian John Hofmeister, retired Shell Oil president. In recent weeks, the long-time outspoken critic of U.S. energy policy has been the darling of the talk show world with appearances on Good Morning America, the Today Show, CNN and more.
What brings Hofmeister to the spotlight is not only his seasoned perspective on the nation’s energy situation but also the fortuitous publication date of his book Why We Hate the Oil Companies. Published by Palgrave MacMillan, the book officially launches on Tuesday. Hofmeister is in New York all week on a media blitz for the book…..

Hofmeister’s ‘Tell-All’ : “Top executives too far removed from retail customer, retail outlet”
HOUSTON – Former Shell Oil president John Hofmeister has written a new book, Why We Hate the Oil Companies, in which he denounces the “parochialism” of the oil industry as well as politicians’ “hollow” promises of energy independence, reported The Washington Post.
The 239-page book, to be published this week by Palgrave Macmillan and subtitled “Straight Talk from an Energy Insider,” has 14 chapters, most of which are devoted to pointing out what Hofmeister believes is wrong, not only with oil companies, but with the entire energy sector, the nation’s energy policies and the politics that produces those policies, added a report by The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette….

“John Hofmeister, former president of Shell Oil, was never your typical oil executive. He wasn’t a petroleum engineer. He had spent most of his career before Shell working at companies such as General Electric and Nortel. Relatively early in the debate, he said climate change was a problem the world had to address. And unlike most oil execs, he’s showing a dash of introspection, writing a new book called “Why We Hate the Oil Companies,” in which he denounces the “parochialism” of the industry as well as politicians’ “hollow” promises of energy independence….”
